Dyea's heyday was brief. In spring 1898, construction began on the White-Pass-and-Yukon-Railway out of Skagway. In August 1898, the government agent reported that Dyea looked dead. By the March census of 1900, 250 people remained in Dyea. In 1902 the post office closed and Dyea was effectively a ghost town.
